A one-day trip to Bagamoyo

The historical town of Bagamoyo is the perfect destination for a short trip, if you stay in Sar Es Salaam for a few days.

Bagamoyo, 75km North from the city, is a small town that still keeps the atmosphere of an ancient era. It has been crossroad of different peoples and cultures, thanks to its port, that was most important of the area in the 19th Century.

The influence of islamic culture is very visible, as well as the way it mixed with the traditional Swahili coastal heritage and cristianity.

When you go to visit Bagamoyo the first stop is Kaole Ruins, an archeaological site where it is possible to see the remains of an ancient muslim Shirazi settleamend, dating back to a period between the 13th century and the 16th century.

Then you can continue to Bagamoyo downtown, where you can visit the Old Boma, the Roman Catholic Museum and the first Church built in Tanganyika, The Missionary Cross at the beach and the German Fort.

After this interesting walk along the dusty streets of this tranquil town, you will enjoy a tasty lunch at a beach resort and some relaxing time, before heading back to Dar es Salaam and Lighthouse Beach Lodge.
