The art of Zanzibar doors

When you walk around the tiny ancient streets of Stone Town, you will notice them for sure... beautiful carved doors locking the traditional Zanzibari homeplaces, owned once upon a time by rich merchants and traders. Such incredible and complicated carvings!

Not everybody know, but these detailed decorations have a meaning: one of the most important part of a Zanzibari house is the door, not just for safety reasons, but also as a kind of “business card” of the inhabitants.

Historically, the different areas of Stone Town where more related to a certain trade rather than others. Same way, not all doors have the same images. Styles and symbols change depending on different cultural roots. There are some recurring figures that are the key to “read” a Zanzibari door.

Flowers indicate a high class family. Chains are the symbol of a slave traders. Fishes and ropes represent a businessman dealing with fishing and vessels. Geometric shapes were for mathematicians and accountants. Beads mean jewellers. And so on…

Nearby markets, you’ll see a lot of Indian doors, built mainly for security purpose - less decorated and reinforced with dhow nails. In other areas you’ll see Arabic doors, richer in carving with visible symbols and Koranic scripts.

You need to be a good observer when you have a trip in Stone Town. So many secrets are hidden in this unique corner of the Archipelago!

Discovering nature and traditions at the Lighthouse

There’s a lot to discover around the Lighthouse Beach Lodge! Lot of time to run on the beach, swim and play in the Ocean… but today we want to talk about small but fun explorations that your kids will enjoy for sure - and the holidays will be unforgettable also for them.

Have you ever tasted fresh honey?

When it’s dark, then it’s time to look for it. You can sit in the middle bush and look at four branches that lay on the ground, burning a little, and the small flare made of palm leaves that the watchman bring further and further into the buzzing hole. The prize, later, will be sweet!

Like hunters in the bush

With a spear in your hand, four dogs and a local hunter, you can walk into the bush. Dogs chasing the scent, and while the excited hunters trying to keep up, the high screams from the little unpredictable animal sounds towards you.

Reptiles in the sun

Some hours off to a cliff where the sun is burning, with a machete in your hand. The experienced watchman will present you the reptiles sleeping in the warm sun. So much to learn!

Preparing local nuts’ snacks

On the burning fire, women take out the burning pieces and throw sand over the coal-black nuts to cool them. Then they begin the big job of taking off the outer shell, the size of two thumbs, and peel them out of the thin membrane that protects the nut inside.

You can see and learn… then, it's your turn!

Go Kitesurfing!

Let us tell you. Relax and fun can go together, along the Tanzanian coast! Even if you chose Lighthouse Beach Lodge because you really need an escape from everyday stress, remember that this is more than just a quite place...

Maybe you can stay lazy on the beach for a couple of days, but then you can plan some activities and sport. This is the right choice to give more value to your holiday.

If you're a little bit trained and full of energy, you can try kitesurfing lessons. This is one of the emergent sea sports, that is becoming more and more popular in this area; crystal sea and reliable wind are the main highlights making this environment good both for learners and experts.

Kitesurf is a surface water sport where the power of the wind is used to propel a controllable power kite across the water on a kiteboard. Despite the way it looks, it is quite easy to learn the basic techniques of kitesurfing, plus it doesn’t require to be very strong.

Trainers say that this sport is suitable for most of people of any age. Just a few and simple rules, that you can get during a short course, will be enough to go on and exercise yourself in total safety. As one becomes more confident, it is possible to specialize in different styles, from speed racing to freestyle.

We can arrange for you kitesurf lessons along the beach nearby Lighthouse Beach Lodge. If you would like to challenge wind and sea, let us know with some advance and we'll be happy to organize your course!
